Trump urges Iranian to keep protesting throughout nation

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump publicly encouraged anti-government demonstrators in Iran to persist with nationwide protests, asserting that assistance would soon arrive.

In a message posted on social media on Tuesday, Trump directly addressed demonstrators, writing: "Iranian Patriots, keep protesting - take over your institutions!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price," followed by, "I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of protesters stops. Help is on its way. MIGA!!!" The slogan echoed Trump’s well-known campaign phrase, adapted to reference Iran.

Trump did not clarify what consequences he intended when stating that Iranian officials would "pay a big price." However, a day earlier he had announced that the United States would impose a 25% tariff on "any and all" countries that maintain business ties with Iran.

Also on Monday, US officials indicated that Trump "has an interest" in pursuing diplomatic engagement with Tehran, but his remarks the following day suggested that any such efforts have been suspended.

Iranian officials responded sharply. A senior member of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council wrote on social media: “We declare the names of the main killers of the people of Iran: 1- Trump 2- Netanyahu,” referencing Israel’s prime minister.

Iranian authorities have repeatedly accused the United States and Israel of supporting what they describe as “riots” and “terrorism” amid the unrest.

While no official casualty figures have been released, estimates cited by rights-monitoring reports suggest that more than 2,000 people have been killed, including both protesters and members of the security forces.
