US–Iran Standoff Enters Prolonged Cold War-Style Phase
Officials described the conflict as having shifted into “a Cold War-like phase, with financial sanctions, gunboat interdictions, and talks about having talks,” a media outlet reported on Tuesday, citing US officials.
They also expressed concern that Washington could become trapped in what they called a frozen confrontation—neither full-scale war nor a diplomatic agreement—potentially requiring continued US military presence in the region for an extended period.
In such a scenario, the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed, the US-led blockade would persist, and both sides would continue waiting for the other to either “blink or fire first,” the report said.
The report added that US President Donald Trump is still weighing options between authorizing further military action or relying on his “maximum pressure” sanctions campaign in hopes of pushing Tehran toward negotiations.
With US midterm elections approaching in roughly six months, one official described the situation as politically and economically difficult for the administration. “A frozen conflict is the worst thing for Trump politically and economically,” the official told the media outlet.
The same official added: “I would describe him as frustrated but realistic. He doesn't want to use force. But he's not backing down.”
