Australia Moves to Cut Fuel Tax by Half as Iran War Pushes Prices Up

(MENAFN) Australia has moved to shield motorists from surging energy costs, announcing a temporary halving of its fuel tax as the widening Middle East conflict continues to throttle global oil supplies and drive up pump prices nationwide.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took to US social media platform X to deliver the announcement directly to the public, framing the measure as immediate financial relief.

"We're halving the fuel tax for three months to save you money when you fill up," Albanese said.

The Prime Minister squarely attributed the domestic price surge to the ongoing regional conflict, acknowledging the mounting strain on Australian households.

"The conflict in the Middle East is pushing up prices at home. And we know Australians are feeling the pressure," he said.

"So we're making every litre of petrol and diesel cheaper through to June 30. We're also cracking down on petrol price gouging with huge fines," Albanese said, warning of "uncertain" things around the world.

As the US-Israeli war with Iran entered its second month and continued to batter global energy markets, Canberra emerged as one of the first governments worldwide to tap its strategic oil reserves in response. In a further sign of the energy crunch's severity, Australia placed emergency fuel reserve orders from the US — a step not taken in decades.

The federal intervention comes as relief measures multiply at the state level. On Sunday, the states of Victoria and Tasmania jointly announced the introduction of free public transport services, offering commuters an alternative means of offsetting the financial blow of elevated fuel costs.
